How does a CEO speak?
Business speaking is something that is not common to all. However speaking as an activity is a process that requires thinking, writing and presenting one's thoughts. It is generally seen that people who talk a lot do not follow the usual activities preceding the activity of speaking. However there are people who talk when they have content to present and present it in the most vivid manner. These are the kinds which lead. Leaders are people who have to take almost a decision every second! Not only do they have to decide on critical matters but they also have to communicate their actions to public in such a manner that it does not leave any space for misunderstanding.
To tell people what is on your mind requires a great level of aptitude as well as presentation. Whenever we are preparing for a meeting we decide on the various audio visual methods that we would be using to convey our ideas. Should a presentation be made or a set of written text be floated around the entire table? Though it hardly makes a difference, but it will ultimately have an impact on what your audience or listeners understand. The quality that differentiates between a leader and a speaker is that a leader has the ability to show direction.
The way CEO speaks depends on the kind of personality he is: whether an introvert or an extrovert. An extrovert would never want to wait and think before speaking whereas an introvert starts thinking long before interacting with his audience. For example leaders such as Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet have always made an effort to come out and interact with the public whenever the occasions have called for. However there have been leaders who always work behind the scenes like Mark Zuckerberg and interact via social networking sites and blogs.
No matter what the medium of interaction be, one thing that matters the most is how well ideas, thoughts and plans are presented during public speaking. And not all are natural born leaders. The skills can however be acquired externally. Suzanne Bates has compiled a piece of work based on her experience of interviewing around 1000's of leaders and brought out those qualities which matter the most in any interview, speech or presentation. Before speaking like a CEO, one must first start thinking like a CEO!
